pike flies

Here are a couple of pike flies i tied up yesterday, my simplified take on the classic bunny bug pattern. These flies couldnt be any simpler, one longish strand of rabbit zonker tied just above the bend in the hook and another strip hackled around the shank, for a head you can either use dumbell eyes or just use thread, ive used stick on eyes on mine but painting them on is another option. You can use strips of crystal flash or whatever to make them a bit more enticing aswell.

I tried using chinchilla zonker for the grey one in the middle and found it pretty crap truth be told, dunno if i just got a dodgy batch but all the fur was coming out and its looks a bit rubbish. Hopefully the pike dont mind too much ;)

These flies look fantastic in the water, they pulse when retrieved and especially in the brighter colours are killer for pike. Another bonus is that they are not too heavy to cast either and they sink fairly quickly, these type of patterns are always my first port of call when im on the bank and work well in all sorts of colours especially black , orange and white.

I tie similar patterns.I have found that a black tail and a red bunny hackle works very well in low light periods.if not black try dark purple instead. These flies should be used early morning or early evenings especially in summer.
